Comment by Sarah Fuller on February 2, 2013 at 4:39pm I'm dumbfounded...but not necessarily surprised that lawmakers would take climate change denial that far. Consider the Texas GOP platform's section on education which included the following:
Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.
"We oppose the teaching of higher order thinking skills..." Part of the necessity of children developing higher order thinking skills is the ability to recognize, research, and address issues like social injustice, climate change and environmental sustainability. I suppose if we bury our heads deep enough in the sand, we won't notice extreme weather events and disappearing coastlines. Problem solved.
Comment by Mary Thompson on January 26, 2013 at 5:07am Wow. That's lunacy.
Comment by Leah Taber on January 25, 2013 at 9:29pm Leave it to Colbert to break things down with a sense of humor. As someone working in South Carolina who lived in North Carolina for two years, this law leaves me dumbfounded.
